“The Truth About Civil War Surgery”
Date:
Sunday, June 6th
Time: 12:30 pm
Location: Restored Barn
As a young child, John Moss moved to Pennsylvania
and grew up with animals on the family farm. Fascinated with
the Civil War, he often thought about riding with his Civil
War hero’s Mosby and Forrest through the Chester countryside.
After college, he pursued a veterinary degree
at the University of Pennsylvania. He currently has a veterinary
practice and surgical referral service in Chester County,
PA. Dr. Moss has been a Civil War reenactor for 20 years,
and has been a board member of the Society of Civil War Surgeons
for twelve years. He is a regular speaker at their annual
convention and enjoys researching the history of medical and
veterinary medicine in the 1860’s. He often portrays
a Civil War surgeon or scout at reenactments, and has an extensive
collection of reproduction and original 1860’s medical
and surgical instruments, pharmacy and period medical publications.
Hear this fascinating presentation about the
world of surgery during the Civil War beginning with the educational
backgrounds of many of these men, comparisons between Northern
& Southern procedures, how medicine improved based upon
what was learned in field hospitals, and see what the essential
tools of the trade were for a typical surgeon.
