Harriet Tubman Living History Experience
Scheduled Performances

The Harriet Tubman Living History Experience highlights and
heightens public awareness of the Underground Railroad and
the life of one of its most celebrated
figures, Harriet Tubman.
Blending the accounts of special events in
Tubman’s
life on the Underground Railroad through the Civil
War, with an acute sense of Tubman’s personal qualities,
presenter Millicent Sparks renders an emotional
and charged presentation that is sure to relate to audiences.
Using rhythmic southern speech style that is
identified with American slaves, Sparks sings 19th century
freedom songs (Negro spirituals) that were sung by Tubman,
often as coded messages designed to facilitate the guiding
of her fugitive charges northward. At the end of the performance,
students will be invited to ask her questions.
